Primary lymphatic tumors of the mediastinum have both benign and malignant counterparts. Of the malignant lymphomas, Hodgkin's disease of the mediastinum, Stage IA, has a good prognosis. Three cases of Hodgkin's disease of the thymus, treated only by total surgical excision, recurred as classic extramediastinal Hodgkin's disease; Hodgkin's thymoma is now managed by combined surgical and radiotherapy. Mediastinal malignant lymphomas of histiocytic, lymphocytic, and plasma cell types had a uniformly poor prognosis. Mediastinal angiomatous lymphoid hamartomas must be differentiated from the malignant lymphomas.
