This report is concerned with 170 patients who have demonstrated metastatic malignant melanoma of the skin. There have been 11 secondary “cures” among 123 patients who developed a recurrence following excision of a primary localized lesion. There have been 22 “cures” among 69 patients who had metastases to regional lymph nodes at the time of initial therapy. In 23 of these latter patients, a primary lesion was never found. Overall, 17% of patients demonstrating metastatic disease have survived more than 5 years without further evidence of recurrence.
