Fourteen enzyme electrophoretic systems have been studied in the malignant cells of 20 patients with various types of acute leukemia. Although quantitative variations were frequently observed, no abnormal patterns were seen except with adenosine deaminase (ADA) in seven patients with acute myelomonocytic leukemia. In this type of leukemia, a slow moving band of ADA activity in addition to the normal pattern was observed. No patients with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, and only one of the five with acute myeloblastic leukemia showed this pattern. It is suggested that electrophoresis of ADA in cells from patients with acute leukemia may be a useful adjunct to other currently available methods for the categorization of this disease.
