In 22 orchiectomized patients with advanced prostatic carcinoma, adrenalectomy resulted in marked decrease of the urinary excretion of androgen metabolites, irrespective of whether or not the patient had undergone previous hypophysectomy. Patients in relapse after hypophysectomy had elevated plasma levels in LH, FSH, and urinary estrogen as compared to patients in remission. Slightly longer periods of subjective and objective remission were observed in patients whose adrenalectomy was performed within 3 months of the orchiectomy, as compared with other groups in which the adrenalectomy was performed at a later stage.
