Abstract Clinical and pathologic data were reviewed in 54 women with ovarian Brenner tumors. Three women had multiple tumors, which were bilateral in 2; 68.5% of the patients were premenopausal, and all but 5 of the tumors were incidental findings. The most frequent indications for surgery had been uterine myomas and various ovarian cysts and tumors. In 14 of the 15 cases in which the origin of a small tumor could be ascertained, the tumor was found either wholly or largely in the ovarian cortex. Mucinous cystadenomas, germinal inclusion cysts, and simple cysts were commonly found in the same ovary as a Brenner tumor, but rarely in the contralateral ovary. These findings suggest that the Brenner tumor probably has its origin in ovarian surface epithelium. Although endometrial carcinoma and hyperplasia were frequent in post‐menopausal women with Brenner tumors (5 of 17 cases), it is felt that the Brenner tumor probably possesses no specific hormonal activity.
