Incidence estimates of abdominal stoma surgery are used as a rationale for developing new services and personnel in the care of stoma patients. Other national statistics show the need for information and help with stoma management by both lay and professional people. The development of enterostomal therapy as a new paramedical field is described and its areas of function delineated. Stress is placed upon the long‐range nature of stomas in contrast to the usual presentation of stomas as surgical and convalescent concerns. Several tables show the concerns of persons living with a stoma and their need for various types of assistance. Stoma clinics are described as an answer to these life‐long needs.
