A study of 113 family histories from a total of 125 consecutive cases of malignant melanoma from Brisbane and surrounding areas, covering 923 first degree relatives, has shown a heritability of liability to this condition of approximately 11%. Evidence was found to suggest that the hereditary factor is polygenic in nature.
