Fifty‐six neurofibromas from 19 cases of von Recklinghausen's disease were reviewed. Six cases were found with ganglion cells or ganglioneuromatous elements present within neurofibromas. These cases are reviewed and the significance of the findings discussed. Seven cases of isolated ganglioneuromas were studied; the morphology of these tumors was critically compared with the neurofibromas and found to be quite similar. Ultrastructural similarities between ganglioneuroma, neurofibroma, and neuroblastoma maturing into ganglioneurofibroma are documented. Based on this experience and a review of the literature, it is theorized that neurofibromatosis may in some instances be derived from disseminated neuroblastoma or aberrantly migrating neural crest cells, particularly in the syndrome of congenital neuroblastomas with multiple regressing skin and visceral metastases.
