A patient with acute myelogenous leukemia achieved a bone marrow remission with arabinosylcytosine therapy, but his peripheral blood counts failed to return to normal. Platelet survival studies confirmed the clinical diagnosis of hypersplenism, which was due to disseminated candidiasis. Following splenectomy, his peripheral blood returned to normal, and his disseminated candidiasis was cured with amphotericin B therapy.
