Quantitative histologic studies have shown that the thymus in patients with neoplasia differs in several morphologic respects from the thymus in normal controls of the same sex and age. The most consistently altered features were: increased diameter of Hassall's corpuscles in prepuberal patients with neoplasia and decreased diameter in postpuberal patients with neoplasia; decreased total cellularity and decreased number of lymphocytes in postpuberal patients; and increased number of Hassall's corpuscles, decreased number of lymphocytes, increased diameter of the largest Hassall corpusle, and decreased total cellularity in prepuberal patients. Most of these differences were statistically significant. These findings suggest that the thymus is related to human as well as experimental neoplastic disease.
