A study was made of the epithelial changes in spontaneously prolapsed recti of mice sacrificed from 5 to 12 weeks after the prolapse was noted. All mice showed epithelial proliferation and downgrowth, with or without cyst formation, extending down into the submucosa and at times into the muscularis. The foregoing was interpreted as being secondary to the exposure of the mucosa with resulting shallow ulcerations, chronic inflammation and edema of the wall. The lesions closely resemble the findings in colitis cystica in man and experimental enteritis cystica in the rat. The findings emphasize the importance of caution in evaluating tumor‐like lesions in the gastrointestinal tract.
