Nine well‐documented cases of central mucoepidermoid tumors of the jaws, including one new case report, are reviewed. Eight of the tumors arose in the posterior portion of the mandible and one in the maxilla. The central mucoepidermoid tumor apparently has a rapid onset, usually producing symptoms in less than a year, and is locally aggressive but does not metastasize readily. The lesion is characterized by a cystic or multilocular radiolucency often accompanied by swelling or expansion of the alveolar cortical plate. A wide surgical excision offers a good prognosis.
