Two groups of male patients with localized surgically treated primary pulmonary cancer—94 from the period 1947—54 and 163 from 1955—62—were examined retrospectively. It was found that in the recent period tumors were diagnosed at an earlier stage and that patients experienced less delay from on‐set of their initial complaints to diagnosis of the pulmonary cancer. Comparison of survival rates from the two time periods shows an improved prognosis for these patients. Yet the present study has not confirmed the hypothesis that this improvement can be ascribed solely to the earlier detection of pulmonary cancer. In the recent period survival rates were found to be lower for routinely diagnosed cases of cancer of the lung compared to other cases. This must be chiefly due to a far too long period of observation of patients with suspected abnormalities on chest roentgenogram.
