This study indicates that generalizations about the apparent benign behavior of malignant melanoma in Africa are misleading since the majority of cases seen in Uganda have a typically rapid malignant course. The differences in natural history allow three groups to be presented. The factors of sex, age, site, size of tumor and histologic grading of cells and degree of pigmentation do not seem to be responsible for these differences and have no particular prognostic significance. This suggests a difference in host response to the presence of the tumor.
