Sera from patients with acute leukemia (7), chronic myelocytic leukemia (13), chronic lymphatic leukemia (4), polycythemia vera (10), myelofibrosis (12) and lymphomas (5) were tested for myelostimulatory factors by culturing normal bone marrow with them in wells, using one part of serum to four parts of NCTC 109. Compared with controls using pooled human serum, 12 CML and two AL sera stimulated granulocytopoiesis; all ten PV sera stimulated erythropoiesis and one MF serum stimulated fibroblast formation. The granulopoietic factor in CML serum was decreased in remission and its action in vitro was inhibited by prednisone. The serum of one patient with CML which was stimulatory during the patient's relapse became toxic following irradiation of the patient's spleen, at a time when remission was just beginning.
