The pathology of adrenal tumors removed from 18 patients with primary aldosteronism is presented and discussed. The tumors tend to be small, often weighing less than 6 Gm. Almost all are benign. Females are affected more frequently than males. In either sex they occur most commonly between the ages of 31 and 50. The tumors show different histologic patterns but functionally they are all composed of “hybrid” cells which have the biochemical features of a mixture of zona glomerulosa and zona fasciculata cells. Some tumors are made up almost exclusively of glomerulosa‐type cells; others have nodular areas of compact cells, similar to those of the zona reticularis of the normal gland. The attached or contralateral adrenal cortex shows hyperplasia of the zona glomerulosa.
