A right nephrectomy was performed on a 3½‐week‐old Caucasian female infant for an encapsulated tumor mass which proved to be a stromogenic tumor. It was classified as a hamartoma of the leiomyomatous type. Since the clinical impression prior to surgery was Wilms' tumor, the child was started on a course of actinomycin D. The drug proved toxic to the patient and ultimately caused her death. The authors advise that this drug be administered only in the postoperative period when a firm pathologic diagnosis has been established.
