Histologic material from 72 cases clinically diagnosed as mycosis fungoides, lymphoma cutis and exfoliative dermatitis was reviewed. Forty seven of these cases were classified histologically as nonspecific chronic dermatitis. Of the remaining 25 cases, 7 were classified as hyperplastic reticulosis, 4 as malignant reticulosis in situ and 14 as malignant reticulosis. Follow‐up study indicated that hyperplastic reticulosis may undergo transition into malignant reticulosis in situ, that malignant reticulosis in situ may transform into malignant reticulosis and that a rapid change in the clinical course of the disease may accompany the latter transformation. Cases of hyperplastic reticulosis and malignant reticulosis in situ generally had a prolonged clinical course. With a few exceptions, cases classified as malignant reticulosis followed a short clinical course to death. The authors recommend that the term “mycosis fungoides” be discarded.
