In a series of 128 consecutive autopsies of patients with malignant neoplastic disease 34 were considered suitable for analysis of parathyroid weight, structure and function after all cases with obvious causes for secondary hyperparathyroidism or hypercalcemia were rejected. The author's opinion is that, in the material reviewed, a relationship does not exist between hypercalcemia, hyperphosphatemia or hypophosphatemia and any specific tumor type or parathyroid lesion. There was, however, a slight increase in the weight of the parathyroid glands, with a hyperplasia of eosinophil cells and to a lesser extent of chief cells. A summary of malignant disease case reports from the literature, in which either the parathyroid gland histology or weights were studied or in which serum calcium levels were recorded, is presented.
