A case of primary squamous cell carcinoma of the stomach is reported and the previously reported cases are reviewed. Histologic studies of the tumor and surrounding tissue show that the tumor arose in an island of heterotopic squamous epithelium. The tumor attained a large size but did not metastasize. From the author's cases plus those reported by others, they conclude that squamous cell carcinoma probably has a better prognosis than other types of gastric cancer.
