Electron microscopic examination of the liver of rats bearing carcinogen induced subcutaneous sarcoma during the terminal stages of their lives has revealed gross alterations in the morphology of lysosomes. Appearances seen indicate that these organelles swell up and rupture causing liver damage. Other changes seen include (I) formation of intermitochondria bridges and hernias, (2) appearance of dense bodies in the vacuoles of the Golgi complex and (3) areas of focal cytoplasmic degeneration.
