Thickness of cortical bone at the proximal end of the radius was measured from roentgenograms on 139 subjects with mammary carcinoma and on 139 age‐matched normal controls. While no difference was found between the 2 groups in the premenopausal age range, significantly greater loss of cortical bone occurred in the postmenopausal age bracket in normal subjects than in patients with mammary carcinoma. The factor responsible for the slower rate of postmenopausal cortical bone loss in the cancer group appeared to be endogenous estrogen production.
