Two diisocyanate monomers containing methylene groups and built‐in imide structure have been prepared from the parent diacids via the Curtius–Weinstock rearrangement. Polyimides have been synthesized by solution polymerization of these isocyanates with pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA), 3,3′,4,4′‐benzophenonetetracarboxylic dianhydride (BTDA), and hexafluoroisopropylidene‐2,2‐bis(phthalic‐anhydride) (6FDA). All monomers and polymers were characterized by conventional methods, and the physical properties of the polymers, including solution viscosity, solubility, thermal stability and thermal behaviour, were studied. © 2000 Society of Chemical Industry
