The aim of this work is the surface study of the Ce x Zr 1− x O 2 system, one of the main components of the last generation of three‐way catalysts. By Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and using several probe molecules we have tried to characterize surface sites (OH and methanol), acid (CO and pyridine) and basic (CO 2 ) properties of different compositions of the solid solution, as well as to establish a correlation between surface and bulk behaviour. All the probes give coherent information about surface organization and confirm the achievement of a solid solution with a cationic distribution at the surface close to that in the bulk.
