We discuss various descriptors of the stationary input/output process of a node in a queueing system. We show how a complete algorithmic analysis is possible for Markovian nodes with a manageable number of states. That analysis is illustrated by a substantial numerical example. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
