The X‐ray image intensifier converts an X‐ray image into a bright visible light image. This enables image recording as well as viewing without dark adaptation. This tutorial describes the construction and function of the image intensifier tube and its associated optics. Cathet. Cardiovasc. Intervent. 46:238–244, 1999. © 1999 Wiley‐Liss, Inc.
