Atherosclerotic involvement of the aorta and lower extremity vessels is a common clinical problem, especially in developed countries. While x‐ray angiography has been the method of choice for preoperative evaluation of patients with atherosclerotic disease, magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) is emerging as a powerful noninvasive tool that is capable of providing information critical to the care of these patients. The objective of this manuscript is to review the current state‐of‐the‐art of MRA of the abdominal aorta and lower extremity vessels. The techniques are described, the clinical indications for MRA are discussed, and the diagnostic accuracy and pitfalls of the various methods are presented. J. Magn. Reson.
