Treatment of the otonecine alkaloid senkirkine with acetyl chloride affords several unstable substances which form a blue dye with Ehrlich reagent and thus allow the photometric determination of otonecines. The title compound could be isolated and shown to have a quarternary pyrrolium salt structure.
