Since about 20 to 25 years, biological waste air purification systems have been applied successfully to plants with continuous and discontinuous pollutant emissions. The current state of the art are slim trickle‐bed columns with synthetic carrier materials for the active biomass. However, a disadvantage of the biological systems is the relatively large reaction volume required, especially in the case of poorly water‐soluble volatile air pollutants, such as aromatic compounds.
