Industrial and municipal waste water often contain less biodegradable components which prevent a biological treatment. To achieve a quantitative destruction of the less biodegradable components, especially chemical oxidants like hydrogen peroxide or ozone are suitable. Since the wet air oxidation processes usually do not lead to a quantitative oxidation of the components, they are combined with a biological purification step. The originally less biodegradable, toxic components are converted to easily biodegradable, atoxic components by wet air oxidation. A problem of wet air oxidation is the presence of components, which can scavenge hydroxyl radicals in waste water and sewage sludges.
