Vanadium phosphates (VPO) are well known as precursor compounds and catalysts for oxidation of n ‐butane to maleic anhydride. Oxovanadium pyrophosphate (V IV O) 2 P 2 O 7 is considered to be the active and selective crystalline phase of such catalysts. The authors explore correlations between the molarity of V IV/V x O y proportions of (NH 4 ) 2 (V IV O) 3 (P 2 O 7 ) 2 catalysts, the vanadium valence states, and the reducibility of the vanadium as well as the catalytic activity of the solids.
