Characterizing the shape of powder grains is a very active area of research in powder technology. The growing use of complex powder grains, made by super‐critical fluids, to increase the solubility of new low‐solubility drugs, and the increasing use of powder delivery systems to the lung, are areas demanding increased knowledge of the shape of powder grains. The chapter presented here, from the forthcoming book “ Characterization of Powders and Aerosols ”, represents the state‐of‐the‐art review for technologists needing to characterize the shape and structure of powder grains which, it is hoped, will be useful to the powder technology community.
