A gas‐diffusion electrode based on gold deposited catalyst has been developed for SO 2 sensor. The characteristics of the gold catalysts for electrode fabrication were examined by X‐ray absorption spectroscopy. From the test of sensing behavior, it was found that the response current of gold deposited gas‐diffusion sensor prepared by colloidal method was higher than that by immersion method. The optimum PTFE content of the sensor was in the range from 20 % to 40 %. The response was fast with no interference from CO, NO, or O 2 . The stability was very good for a period of runs and the used sensor could be easily regenerated to its original performance.
