Functionalized organic monolayers are excellent candidates for the preparation of templates with selectable surface chemical properties. A versatile self‐assembly approach is reported to the in situ chemical generation of spatially defined surface nanostructures (see Figure). The patterning process used allows the nanoscale inscription of chemical information on the surface of functionalized organic monolayers.
