This paper presents a number of different methods for determining the mar resistance of automotive clearcoats. The various methods are compared on the basis of measurements on different clearcoat systems and the results discussed with other physical parameters (microhardness, crosslinking density). Micro‐scratching tests (individual scratches) were also carried out in addition to more practical tests (simulated car washes).
