Abstract The well known χ 2 goodness of fit test for a multinomial distribution is generally biased when observations are subject to misclassification. In this paper, based on a double sampling scheme, the family of φ‐ divergence test statistics is introduced for testing goodness of fit under misclassification of the data. The case of binomial data is discussed and an illustrative example is also given.
