It is shown that the metastases states of patients with malignant melanoma during their (usually annual) postoperative care can be considered as a first order Markov chain if the state space is suitably extended. Thus, sojourn times in a state up to transition into another one can be analysed by means of Cox's proportional hazard model to find significant factors influencing these times.
