A two‐tailed P ‐value is proposed for testing two‐sided departures from Hardy‐Weinberg equilibrium at a diallelic locus. The calculation of P uses the exact conditional distribution of the test statistic P , the observed number of heterozygotes in the sample. The proposed P ‐value is always two‐tailed, unlike other P ‐values proposed in the literature.
