A two‐tailed P ‐value is presented for a significance test in two by two contingency tables. There is no extraneous quasi‐observation such as is needed in the exact randomized uniformly most powerful unbiased (UMPU) test of the hypothesis of independence. The proposed P ‐value can never exceed unity and is always two‐tailed, unlike other P ‐values proposed in the literature
