We study several problems from physics and engineering whose mathematical modelling leads to partial integral equations involving functions of two variables. In particular, we give an explicit description of the essential spectra of the corresponding partial integral operators. This allows us to derive existence, uniqueness, and well‐posedness results which are useful for the approximate solution and numerical analysis of the equations involved.
