By employing an argon flushed spectrometer for the visible spectral range and MgF 2 optics we succeeded in measuring the resonance transition in C IV at a wave length of 155 nm with high resolution in a gas‐liner pinch device. Before maximum compression and in the late decompression phase the line profiles suffer deformations originating from the motion of the plasma. Shortly after maximum compression remaining velocities and probably turbulence broaden the profiles so that no Stark width can be reliably presented. These measurements show the limits of the present set‐up of the device but also give estimates of the maximum contribution of additional broadening mechanisms thus increasing the reliability of measurements on Stark broadening of spectral lines.
