The S = 1/2 two‐leg spin ladder has a short range magnetic correlation, which induces a spin gap similar to high‐ T c superconductors in the underdoped region. Magnetic excitations were investigated by Raman scattering on single crystals of Sr 14— x — y Ca x Y y Cu 24 O 41 . Anisotropic exchange energies, spin gap, two‐hole bound state and its dissociation were studied as a function of the carrier concentration.
