Metamagnetic transitions induced by an external magnetic field are reported in ErMn 6 Sn 6 samples consisting of fixed randomly‐oriented powder particles with sizes ranging between 100 and 1000 μm and in samples consisting of powder particles with sizes in the range 1 to 100 μm which are free to orient themselves in the applied field. For both types of samples, it is found that upon decreasing temperature, the critical field where the metamagnetic transition occurs first increases, then has a maximum around 200 to 220 K, and finally decreases. Below temperatures of about 150 K, the transition becomes less pronounced. Furthermore, as the temperature decreases from 300 to 120 K, the magnetization first decreases, then has a minimum at about 205 to 225 K, and finally increases with further decreasing temperature. The occurrence of the transition in the free‐powder sample provides evidence that the metamagnetic transition in ErMn 6 Sn 6 is dominated by the exchange interaction.
