The paper presents a systematic analysis of thermodynamic parameters of isotropic solids. It has been stressed that there are only three independent first‐order coordinate derivatives and only four independent parameters depending on the second‐order coordinate derivatives of the thermodynamic coordinates. All other thermodynamic parameters can be obtained from these quantities through exact thermodynamic relations connecting them with the chosen independent set. The choice of the independent set is somewhat arbitrary but may be dictated by the convenience with which they may be determined from the available experimental results. In addition a critical analysis of the several approximations used in the studies of the parameters has been presented. The chosen second‐order parameters have been evaluated for NaCl over the temperature range ≈300 to ≈800 K at atmospheric pressure.
