An investigation of the carrier–LO‐phonon quantum kinetics in bulk semiconductors, quantum wells and quantum wires is presented. The approach is based on the density‐matrix formalism and includes the semiconductor Bloch equations for carrier–carrier and carrier–light interaction. The electron–phonon interaction gives rise to correlations leading to an interaction energy with an oscillatory behavior. The origin of these oscillations and their characteristic frequencies are discussed. The polaron shifts of the exciton lines are calculated for systems of different dimensions. Hot phonon effects in quantum wires are shown to exhibit pronounced differences to the semiclassical case.
