Ultrathin MnTe and CdTe films as well as MnTe/CdTe/MnTe sandwich structures are investigated. Band structure, local densities of states corresponding to Mn(Cd) and Te ions are calculated. Local magnetic moments are also found. Strong modifications of the density of states in the boundary MnTe and CdTe layers are obtained. A small negative splitting of the valence band edge is found at the interface, though no splitting is obtained in the MnTe barrier. The result is consistent with magnetooptical measurements performed for MnCdTe/CdTe heterostructures giving the enhanced Zeeman splitting at the interfaces.
