The width, regularity, and relaxation behaviour of the banded texture varies with the solvent of lyotropic ethylcellulose liquid crystals. The bands in dichloroacetic acid are wider, more stable and more regular than those in glacial acetic acid or acrylic acid. The band width decreases with increasing concentration of the liquid crystalline solutions. The phenomena are tentatively explained with a contraction mechanism. The extended chain conformation favours relatively wide, regular, and stable bands.
