Conjugated χ (3) – active polythiophenes and polybenzobisthiazoles were characterized with respect to linear optical properties like refractive indices and linear absorption coefficients. The contributions of different alkyl side chains to optical properties are discussed for polythiophenes. The materials are discussed with respect to their ability as thin films to guide light in waveguide modes and to the fabrication of channel waveguides. Waveguide losses were measured and compared to the absorption spectra.
