An exact solution describing an axisymmetric gravitational wave propagating in z ‐direction is given in closed form. This solution to Einstein's vacuum field equations has no curvature singularities, in particular it is regular at the symmetry axis. The gravitational wave solution has the nice property that the curvature invariants tend to zero with increasing distance from the axis.
