Selectively, and in less than a minute, self‐assembled monolayers (SAMs) form by oxidizing alkyl thiosulfates and trapping the resulting intermediate or product on gold electrodes. This approach allows SAMs to be formed on specific electrodes held at a sufficiently high potential to oxidize the precursor. The picture shows, using fluorescence microscopy, a selectively modified electrode (B) and an unmodified electrode (A) on an alumina substrate.
